How Teams Advance in the FIFA World Cup 2026™

During the Group Stage, teams compete within their assigned groups of four. Each team plays three matches, earning points for wins and draws.

Following the Group Stage, the tournament enters the newly expanded Round of 32, marking the start of the knockout rounds. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-place teams, advance to this stage. Third-place teams are ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored, team conduct score, and FIFA world ranking.

From that point forward, matches are single elimination. Winners advance, while the losing team is eliminated. Boston’s Quarter-final matchup will feature two teams that have advanced through the Round of 32 and Round of 16, who are competing for a place in the semifinals.
