Visit Castle Island in South Boston
Located in South Boston along Pleasure Bay, Castle Island gives visitors a little bit of everything from history, shoreline paths, beach access, and some of the best views in town! It’s a classic Southie experience, but it also works perfectly for folks who want a low-key afternoon on the water.
Walk the Waterfront at Pleasure Bay
The island’s paved loop is easy to enjoy, with plenty of room for walking, jogging, biking, strollers, and all sorts of exploring. On warm days during the spring and summer, you can pair a Castle Island adventure with nearby South Boston beaches, including M Street Beach, L Street Beach, and Carson Beach.
Explore Fort Independence
At the center of Castle Island sits Fort Independence, the granite fort that gives the area its historic weight — no pun intended. The area was part of Boston’s early harbor defenses (dating back to the 17th century), with the current structure completed in 1851.
Today, Fort Independence remains one of Boston’s most recognizable waterfront landmarks. Visitors are known to walk around the fort, take selfies, enjoy stunning views of Boston Harbor, and, when available, join seasonal tours through the Castle Island Association.
Grab a Bite at Sullivan’s
A Castle Island visit feels incomplete without lunch or dinner from Sullivan’s, a South Boston staple founded in 1951. Grab classics like hot dogs, burgers, fries, seafood, lobster rolls, lime rickeys, and ice cream. Then, find a comfy bench, a patch of grass, or a spot facing the harbor and dig in!
Pro Tip: Sullivan’s operates seasonally, generally from spring through early fall. Check hours before you go, as weather and demand can affect daily operations.
Watch Planes, Ships, & Harbor Traffic
Castle Island is one of the best places in Boston to watch flights coming in and out of Logan Airport. The airport is close enough that plane spotting has become a tradition here, especially for kids and aviation fans.
This summer, Castle Island will also be a prime viewing area for Sail Boston 2026, when “tall ships races” return to Boston Harbor from July 11–16 as part of the Sail250 celebration. However, you can watch all sorts of vessels navigating Boston’s waters year-round.
